WOMEN'S LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CENTER FOUNDATION

WOMEN'S MEMORY

The Women's Library and Information Center Foundation was founded on April 14, 1990 in order to 'understand the presence of women in history, offer proper information to women researchers and preserve today's written documents for future generations'. The Foundation resides in a historical building in Fener which was provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

With only 100 books on its shelves when it was first opened, the library has meanwhile accumulated a collection of 10 018 books in various formats, more than 230 periodicals, ten thousands of newspaper clippings, articles and documents written by women and/or about women and available to individuals and institutions. This is the achievement of hundreds of volunteers and donors who devoted their time and financial resources in order to make the library an increasingly important point of reference. It is also the result of the collaboration between the local government and the library as a non-governmental foundation in Turkey.
